Community Honors Vets With Second Honor Bus Trip, Sentinel Article

Space limitations and the fact that a full page was given to the prior trip meant some editting down of the article submitted, the full article and the accompanying Stories from the WWII honor Bus II article which did not run were posted in my blog.  Additional pictures have been recieved and will be posted below later this date.  I also have additional video which should be posted shortly.

Stories from WWII Honor Bus II & Community Honors Vets with Second WWII Honor Bus Trip (full version)

The volunteers, adult and students mustered out of the MMS WWII Honor Bus Program with a sense of satisfaction, tinged with regret.  It was just one of those activities that you wish you could relive.  The ice cream social helped, but it still left a void.  It was one of those moments when you find your true self by becoming lost in something plainly bigger than self.  It was not just the opportunity to honor surviving members of the greatest generation; it was also seeing the justified pride in eyes the middle school students who proved that idealism beats cynicism; and that a few determined souls can move mountains with determination.  It was also seeing decent and honorable local business people leap at an opportunity to prove that business is about more than money; and that civic leadership and responsibility need only a spark to ignite into a full flame of passion.

Fittingly, it was the students who revived the program, they knew that as long as there are local veterans who have not been taken to the Memorial who want to go, the mission is not complete. Adults involved were quick to confirm their wisdom, and re-enlist.  To ensure no veteran is left behind, the Dauphin County Technical School partnered with Mechanicsburg Middle School so there would be East and West shore involvement.

Details regarding this year's program may be found at www.honorbus.webs.com.  Questions, email blacey@mbgsd.org .  Pictures:Video of the 2009 trip will be posted here on April 27, 2009.
